Good point, LITS. It is disturbingly Jim Jonesish, and that is truly frightening. Here you have a group of people already willing to die for the cause by rejecting blood transfusions when needed. They have proven that they are very deeply malleable already. Partaking in some Kool-Aid would only require one more smallish mental jump. Yikes!

Another Self-Serving F&DS Article
by serenitynow! ini don't know why i keep reading this crap.
the april 15, 2011 kool-aid edition has an article entitled: do you discern the evidence of gods guidance?
the article starts out with how the isrealites followed the "pillar of cloud and fire" which was evidence of god's guidance until they got to the "promised land.

Egypt deep in prophesy of our present and future
by EndofMysteries injust checking if anyone else is onto that, i haven't been here in awhile.

^Oh my, we must be experiencing the fulfillment of this astonishingly accurate prophesy! Basically, the "prophet" said that a major country, at some undetermined time, will experience a breakdown of society as they know it. The Lord must be speaking here...how could any human posess such exclusive knowledge? And on top of it all a cruel leader will come to power? Oh wonder of wonders, the Lord hath spoken.
If you read the rest of Isaiah 19, you will see that Egypt then converts to ancient Judaism, complete with animal and grain sacrifices, and comes under the rule of the Kingdom of Judah. Seems old Izzy (and, apparently, his Lord) had a bit of an agenda when making this prediction.

Some of us were just not cut out to be door to door Salesmen
by life is to short ini got the movie walking the line about johny cash.
i was watching it with my husband and it showed that he was a d2d salesman before he hit it big.
as my husband and i were watching the movie it showed the householders being rude and slamming the door in his face, etc.

It must be even harder now than in the past. At least before the internet took off, we could kind of buy into the idea that it was a worthwhile work, even though televangelists did reach a much larger audience.
Can you imagine trying to work up the gumption to go out there now, knowing the Society could reach just about anyone in the developed world with internet advertising? I just can't see believing that the D2D is anything but a complete waste of time and resources, and it just becomes more of a joke as technology advances.
Any JW that really believes the house to house preaching does anything positive for humanity is clearly fooling himself and pissing away his life and money.

Tuesdays and Thursdays were so depressing. I actually got excited over Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, thinking they were the good days of the week when I was a young kid. Like, I would actually dress better and have more confidence socially on those days. Maybe it was because I knew those were the only days where there was a chance of doing something normal after school. Boo hoo, right?
Glad you got your Thursdays back. Not putting on a suit after a hard day's work is really the way to go.

Did you ever think you'd stop being one of Jehovah's Witnesses?
by sandy ini'm sure this question has been asked before .
i've come a long way in my thinking.

Never. It was the true religion and my entire extended family was fortunate enough to be a part of it.
I had actually at one point come very close to breaking the spell, to the point that I was reading the WT and seeing it from the "other side", from the perspective of a normal person who sees the false logic and misquotes.
But, somehow I managed to beat those independent thoughts down on the advice of my seemingly wise father and ended up with an even deeper belief.
Thankfully the day came when I typed "Jehovah's Witnesses" into a search engine. This site, Freeminds, and a copy of Crisis of Conscience opened my eyes very quickly from there. Thank God.

Overheard JW Phone Conversation
by new light ini was sitting down to lunch yesterday when i heard the man at the table behind me say into his phone "yeah, it's going to be hard since they want us to pioneer in april.".
of course, i was all ears at this point.
next thing i could pick up over the din of a crowded restaurant was "he has to go to the meetings for a year before he can come back.

Of course, I was all ears at this point. Next thing I could pick up over the din of a crowded restaurant was "He has to go to the meetings for a year before he can come back." I also managed to hear the word "disfellowship".
It was a little wierd, I must say. The guy was only in his early 20's, so he had a lot of life in front of him. I was tempted to say something like "It's a shame your religion makes you shun your friends over a silly mistake." But, I thought that talking to a complete stranger about his religion during lunch would be something a JW would do. So, I let it go.
One thought that occured to me after is this: (said in Jeff Foxworthy's voice) "If you use the word 'pioneer' as a verb, you might be a Jehovah's Witness."

Atheism, the absence of someone to pray to.
by cyberjesus ini was talking several days ago with a believer who was telling me what an atheist is.
i personally do not have any gods, therefore i consider myself an atheist.
however this person was telling me that an atheist says there is no god.

Wow Cyber. 1. I never said I was very intelligent.
2. This is very one-sided dialogue, bordering on an interview. Do you actually want to discuss anything?
XChange: Your response to a quote of mine implies that I referred to a supernatural being. This is incorrect. For all I know, we are praying to ourselves. Also, what is supernatural? Anything we could possibly discover in the universe is still natural. Some people can conceive that there is more out there than the world of matter and form, and it all falls under the umbrella of natural.

CJ:
I know what I know. There is no convincing anyone of anything in this game, it is all just so personal. I have lived close to half my life as an agnostic/atheist, doing things every which way on my own, good and bad. I have finally, and by intention, gotten my personal proof, and it is far too special to me to ever sully it by posting it online. Even if I did, who would ever be convinced by it? All I can tell you is "ask and it shall be given", to quote a certain religious text. By "it", I mean that extra drive toward all that is good and true and, yes, knowledge of that which is not visible to the physical eye. Some of us, however, need to try and find "it" on our own, without any help. If you have not exhausted your mental resources trying to find "it" on your own, then there will always be some doubt even if you glimpse "it". Your ego will eventually tell you that it is responsible for the change and from there you slide down. Round and round we go. A certain amount of trial and error is necessary for some of us, the amount depending on the individual mind.
A journey of 1000 miles begins with one step, as we all know. A good first step is to ask the Source for help in overcoming some weakness that you know you cannot fully control on your own. Don't worry about religion or dogma or feeling foolish. Just humbly ask and see what happens.
